Highlights Before Break

Hello families,

This week we wrapped up our non-fiction reading and writing units. The Fox Kits have learned so much about learning by reading non-fiction books, reading aloud like experts, and writing facts to teach others about topics that interest them. On Friday we shared all of this with some kindergarten classes, reading them the books we wrote!

First grade also led the All School Meeting. It was fun to be part of the action. Our class dumped hearts into the heart monitor on Tuesday and had our celebration on Friday: crafts and a movie!

There was also a fun whole school celebration, Wacky Wednesday. Our class looked fantastic in red!

We had an assembly to learn about the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. The event will take place on March 11th. If your child raised money to support the cause please send the envelope back in, or submit donations online, on that day.

In math we continued to practice measuring accurately with inch tiles, comparing lengths of items, and putting items in order from shortest to longest.

Hopefully this vacation will give everyone a chance to get healthy and start back strong in March! Be well, drink plenty of water, and rest up!

Dates to Remember:
  • February 24 - March 3 - Winter Break + Inservice Days - No School
  • March 4 - school resumes
  • March 19 - 11 am dismissal for WMHS family conferences
  • March 20 - 11 am dismissal for WMHS family conferences
  • March 23 - field trip to the Flynn Theater to see "The Snowy Day!"
Have a great weekend!

February Highlights

Hello families,

What a whirlwind month it's been! With the snow day last week I never got to update the blog so here's what we've been up to the past 2 weeks!

Reading: We've been practicing reading non-fiction books like experts, talking about keywords, making our expression lively and bringing the learning to life, and noticing how our books are organized.

Writing: We've been working steadily on writing our own teaching books. Some students have written 2 or even 3 books! Next week we will finish up this unit and celebrate by reading our teaching books to some kindergarteners.

Read Aloud: We continue talking about and reading about notable African-Americans for Black History Month. We read about Nina Simone and listened to some of her music. We read about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his important work with non-violent protest and civil rights. We read about Melba Doretta Liston and how jazz changed her life and listened to some of her music as well.

Math: We are working hard to measure things accurately with different tools. We've learned why it's important to measure and how important the unit of measure is to knowing how long something is. This week we started applying this to "Kim's Fish" in which we help measure fish she caught to see if they are "keepers." Ask your child more about this!

FUNdations: We finished our first glued sound unit with -all, -am, and -an. We are now building upon all the spelling patterns (CVC, digraphs, bonus letters (ff,ll,ss), and glued sounds) and adding a suffix s to spell plural words (i.e. shops, bells, dogs, fans).

WIN: reading, math, ELL, and social WIN groups continue to meet. Students who do not meet with WIN teachers other than me continue their work in Fact Power in which they become fluent in addition and subtraction facts following patterns (i.e. N+1, N-1, N+2, N-2, doubles, doubles+1, make 10, etc).

We celebrated the 100th day on Monday and Valentine's Day today! We had lots of fun all week making cards for one another.

The heart monitor was filled and we will celebrate with Wacky Wednesday. Next Wednesday first grade will wear red. They may have wacky hair or hats too. Once we finally got some hearts again we got to trade in all the high 5s we'd collected--410 hearts worth! That filled our heart jar too. We'll vote and have a celebration next week. =)

There continue to be many children sick and going home sick (tummy bugs, flu, fevers, bad coughs, etc). We do our best to wash up often at school and remind to cover coughs but germs spread easily. Remember if your child has a fever over 100 they may not come to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without medicine.
